Jhaam, who was arrested on July 21 in Bangalore , from the venue of his daughter's wedding reception, admitted to operating cricket betting in tandem with Chhota Shakeel. Jhaam, in fact, claimed that Shakeel owed him Rs 400 crore.
According to a Crime Branch official, “Jhaam said that police was tipped off about his visit to India to attend his daughter's wedding by Shakeel, who found perhaps betrayed him to avoid paying him the Rs 400 crore.
Early in 2007, Jhaam had organised a stage show in Pakistan, in which top Pak filmstars, including Meera, participated. Dawood and Shakeel also attended the do.”
Jhaam also admitted to visiting former Bollywood music composer Nadeem in London to collect money won in bets placed by the latter on cricket matches.
The bookie, who had been operating out of Dubai for the past 20 years, came to Bangalore in July for his daughter's wedding.
Such was his audacity that he had sent out invitations to several businessmen from Mumbai, who had earlier been extorted by Shakeel, with Jhaam playing mediator.
“The invitation card for the wedding reception sent across by Jhaam to these businessmen only listed the city of Bangalore as venue.
The exact location was told to them over telephone. Jhaam suspects that one of these businessmen, at the instance of Shakeel, may have tipped off Mumbai Crime Branch about his visit,” a senior Crime Branch official told DNA. Jhaam is currently lodged at the Arthur Road jail.
