UK-based steel magnate Laxmi Mittal urged graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to stay in India and utilise their talents and intellect for the country’s economic growth.

Addressing the graduates on the 45th convocation day ceremony of IIT-Bombay on Friday, Mittal said that though it was great for foreign countries to have the majority of IITians working in multinational companies abroad, it was not good news for India, whose pool of talent was utilising its potential for the development of foreign countries.

In an endeavor to motivate IIT graduates, Mittal said IITians don’t just influence Silicon Valley in California, USA.

He said that the Mittal group of industries had over 70 IIT graduates holding senior positions who have played an important role in making the Mittal group the fifth largest in the world. “IIT graduates should think of building careers in their own country.

India needs talented people for its economic prosperity. IIT graduates need to understand that India is attracting investment from an immense number of foreign countries,” said Mittal.

“Students should grab the right opportunities and have faith in their judgment. Graduates should try to make the most of everything and pursue goals by imbibing skills like patience.”

The institute also conferred the special degree of Doctor of Science on Professor MGK Menon, advisor to the Indian Space Research Organisation’s department of space.

Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar said, “Although IIT has played a major role in nation-building in the era of its golden jubilee celebrations, there is a need to develop clarity in the context of the perceived scenario of our country and the role of IIT in it.”
