21 Muslims were given photocopies to start their own businesses

Barely a week after the DNA exposé, the Maulana Azad Alpsankhyank Arthik Vikas Mahamandal corrected its mistake of distributing photocopies of cheques to 21 Muslim unemployed youths under a scheme to start their own business ventures.

The state government-run finance corporation that faced much embarrassment following the report (For them, it’s a reality cheque, DNA, July 24, 2007),  an important formality pertaining to guarantor relaxed, and distributed real cheques to all beneficiaries at its office in the Nagpur on Tuesday, this to save the face of two Maharashtra ministers, who had distributed the cheques’ photocopies.

The corporation had distributed photocopies of cheques to the beneficiaries at a public function in Nagpur on July 12, making a mockery of the welfare scheme. The Managing Director of the corporation, Gaffar Sheikh, flew in from Mumbai on Tuesday morning and met all the beneficiaries at the office to hand over their cheques. The MD also apologised for the faux pass and said he would try and simplify formalities for seeking loan under the scheme.

“We are happy that the corporation released our cheques by easing formalities, otherwise it was impossible for us to get the loan,” said Kaleem Sheikh, one of the 21 beneficiaries. The 30-year-old wants to start his electrical shop and repay the loan within the stipulated time of three years. Sources said, Gaffar Shaikh feared that he would be made a scapegoat by the two ministers - Textile Minister, Satish Chaturvedi and Dairy Development Minister, Animal Husbandary, Fisheries and Wafk Board Minister Anees Ahmed - over the issue.

The harangued beneficiaries were intimated on Monday evening to be present in the office to receive the cheques at the hands of the MD, who found a way out to overcome the rules and grant loans to the unemployed Muslim youths.

“It’s good that the corporation admitted its mistake and corrected it; we want it to function for the welfare of the Muslim youths,” said Jawed Shaikh, the founder president of Rashtriya Muslim Bahujan Parishad. The Parishad was instrumental in fighting for the creation of the finance corporation.
