Kochi sailor was employee of  UAE shipping firm

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as the captain of an Albanian vessel that sunk off Kochi waits for permission to return home, a seaman from Kochi went missing with his ship somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

Relatives of Aneesh P Thampy, employed with a UAE-based shipping company, were told by the company that the seaman was on board MV Infinity Marine I that disappeared during its voyage from the UAE to Kenya on June 26.

“We last heard from Aneesh on June 7. Then his ship was anchored at Fujaira in the UAE due to Cyclone Gonu. There was no word from him since then. He didn't say where he was headed for,” Aneesh’s brother Ajeesh said. Aneesh is the elder son of Thabeetha and NV Thampy, an employee of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi.

“Only when we called up the shipping company did they inform us that Aneesh was on board,” Ajeesh said.
