BANGALORE: The Left parties will spell out their stand on the nuclear deal with the US only after examining the text of the agreement to see whether their concerns have been taken care of, CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat said.

The Left had firmly opposed the Hyde Act, passed by the US Congress and based on which the US should come to an agreement with India, Karat told reporters here.

"We think provisions of the act are against our country's interests. It's also setting terms and conditions for our foreign policy system," he said.

Karat recalled that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had in August last year assured the Left parties that the nine issues raised by them would be "fully protected or covered" in the bilateral agreement.

"We have to look at the text of the agreement to see whether those assurances are met or whether the bilateral agreement will be able to effectively check what's there in the Hyde Act. So without looking into it, we are not going to come to any conclusion," he said.

"Our final view will be given after the release of the text (of the bilateral agreement)."

When a reporter said the Congress party had claimed that the Left parties had endorsed the deal, Karat said: "We met them, we heard them. We said, now show us the text and we will get back to you. We have neither rejected nor endorsed it."
