LONDON: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects Wayne Rooney to have his best season yet for the top soccer club.

Ferguson believes the 21-year-old will reap the benefits of his first full pre-season with United for four years.

"Wayne's incredible, a very strong character and he will be a big player next season, believe me," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"He'll have a great season because this is the first time since he joined the club that he will have had a proper pre-season with us."

Rooney, currently on tour with United in Asia, has not played a competitive match since May's FA Cup final after serving a suspension for England's European Championship qualifier in Estonia last month.

Ferguson added, "The likes of Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are young lads who could play all day long, but the summer break will benefit everyone because they have been away for a long time."

"Wayne is the first to the training ground every morning. It's unbelievable, but he just loves football and training."

Meanwhile, Nani offered the first evidence of the talent, which persuaded United to pay 17 million pounds for his services as Ferguson's men ended their Far East tour with an easy 3-0 win over Guangzhou Pharmaceutical.

The 19-year-old's magnificent chip capped another memorable evening on a largely successful trip and suggested comparisons with compatriot Ronaldo may not be too far wide of the mark.

Rooney and Lee Martin were also on target for the Red Devils, although, as they head home from China, Ferguson does have a few problems to ponder.

With Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar joining Owen Hargreaves on the sidelines with various knocks, United have not exactly emerged from their two-week trip unscathed.

Paul Scholes flew home on Monday to begin a three-week lay-off after suffering a knee injury in Seoul, so as Gary Neville, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer missed the tour entirely to work on their fitness and Park Ji-Sung and Ben Foster are both out until the new year following surgery, United are hurtling towards the opening weekend in a fortnight with a lengthy list of injuries.
