Victim’s mother blames school but authorities say it is an accident

A six-year-old student of Jankidevi Public school, Andheri, allegedly drowned to death in school swimming pool on Tuesday afternoon. The kid’s mother accused the school authorities of negligence, while the authorities maintain it was an accident.

The police said Hare Krishna Singh drowned in the pool when a rubber-float around him slipped away in the water. At least 20 students were in and around the pool when the incident took place.

The school management has outsourced swimming activities to Sai Swimming Consultants (SSC), an agency that offers similar services to several other reputed schools in the city. The agency has been associated with the school for last nine years. The police detained two instructors present on the site. The owner of the agency, too, has been summoned for the questioning.

“We have registered a case of accidental death by drowning and further investigation is on” said investigating officer PSI Nandraj Patil, of Versova police station. However, Sarita Uday Singh, Hare Krishna’s mother has accused school of negligence and said, “Had he been taken to the nearest hospital at the earliest, he would be alive today.” According to Eddul Behram, Director of Education of Jankidevi Public School, “It was purely an accident and there was no negligence from the side of the school.”

“In any case, the school has no role as the swimming activity has been outsourced to the consultant for last nine years and they are the ones who are dealing with the police.”

They also claimed that the boy was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital and his mother too was informed immediately.

But Sarita Singh says, “I was informed of the incident 40-45 minutes after it took place. I was told that the boy had been taken to Apollo Hospital. But in fact, he was taken to Indu Khosla Hospital, which is a stone’s throw away from Apollo Hospital.”

Sarita said that the doctors were extremely slow in responding to the situation. “Incidentally, I saw Dr Indu, my childhood friend, who was out of touch for the last 20 years. I recognised and called her, but she too did nothing to save my child,” Sarita said.

She then took her child to Cooper Hospital in an auto-rikshaw where he was declared dead on admission.
