Couturier Tahiliani is reinventing himself and how!

He turned 45 last Thursday, and when asked if he was free for a photo shoot suggested that we shoot him jumping out of a microlite with the Gateway of India in the background! In conversation with the very candid Tarun Tahiliani…

Are you serious about microliting?
Serious? Well I was planning to buy one to travel from home to work and still recall my microlite ride in South Africa’s Kwa-Zulu Natal! It would have been a great thing to own a microlite.

How will it work?
It will remain a bit of a dream. The civil aviation authorities threw the spanner and the kitchen sink in the work—you aren’t allowed to take off from private lands and I would need to drive to Palam airport, which would beat the purpose!

Weren’t you supposed to show at the Milan week?
Well, I was, but that’s the same weekend as the launch of Vogue India and I would much rather be here for that. Plus, I’m also in talks to launch stores in four countries.

Do you have a take on the younger breed of designers?
Poor things don’t understand that fashion isn’t an intellectual exercise; it’s a business. The problem with some of the younger designers is that they are trying to be different for the sake of being different. Their garments are poorly constructed and don’t have even one iota of Indianness!

What’s your take on the style of Bollywood celebs?
Well, half of the media can’t differentiate one designer from the other, plus most of the celebrities are in any case wearing them for free, so then how does it matter? If someone like Parmeshwar Godrej, Tina Ambani or Minal Modi — people who can afford them wear it…then it makes sense.

As for international brands, will Gaultier actually even suit the Indian body-type?
He’ll be lucky if three people buy it…although I do know some people who will buy it and frame it in their hallway!
