Health minister plans to have a fixed tenure for the AIIMS director

NEW DELHI: The government has decided to amend the law governing All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for their better functioning.

The move is expected to cut short the tenure of AIIMS Director P Venugopal, who took on Health minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss over the issue of autonomy of AIIMS. Ramadoss got a set back when the Delhi High Court stayed Venugopal’s removal from the post of Director.

Ramadoss made a convincing presentation at the Cabinet meeting on Friday to get its “unanimous” support.

“The medical services in Delhi cannot be seen in situation where the patients suffer. We are firmly behind the health minister. This will be first thing done in the monsoon session of the Parliament. The amendment will remove anarchy in AIIMS and bring in improvements required in the overall administrative functioning of the prestigious institution,” said Information and Broadcasting minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi.

The government will now amend the 1956 AIIMS Act to facilitate the changes which includes fixing the tenure of AIIMs Director to five years and having the retirement age at 65 years, or whichever is earlier.

Once implemented, Venugopal will have to relinquish office immediately as he turned 65 this month.
