MUMBAI: The Special TADA court hearing the 1993 Mumbai blasts trial on Wednesday handed down death sentence for the first time. But it also marked a first for the Judge.

In his sixteen-years career in the judiciary, special TADA judge Pramod Kode has never given the death sentence before, court sources said.

Kode took over the trial from J N Patel in 1996 when the latter was elevated to the High Court.

Until today, Kode had given fourteen life sentences in the 1993 trial. Today, he sent three of the twelve bomb planters -- Abdul Ghani Turk, Pervez Nasir Shaikh and Mushtaq Tarani -- to the gallows.
