KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress legislator Javed Khan was arrested on Saturday for allegedly leading a mob that ran amok in the Calcutta National Medical College Hospital (CNMCH) on Monday night after the death of a young girl in the operation theatre.

A mob allegedly led by Khan, the leader of opposition in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and an MLA from Ballygunge, went on rampage in the hospital after it was alleged that the girl was raped inside the operation theatre and killed - a charge denied by the doctors and the state health minister later.

"I don't mind courting arrest because now our Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya believes only in stifling the voices of people with his cops," Khan said after his arrest.

He was later produced in the Sealdah court that released him on bail.

"The arrest was meant to hush up the probe. We did not break any hospital property and the death was not normal," Khan told IANS after his bail.

"This was meant to scuttle the probe and bail out the doctors," he said.

Khan was arrested by policemen of the Beniapukur police station in central Kolkata after he squatted in front of the police station with Trinamool Congress supporters and shouted slogans.

His arrest followed a formal police complaint by the hospital employees.

The 17-year-old girl's death late on Monday evening had triggered a mob fury in the hospital premises as her family and associates alleged she was raped and murdered by the physicians who were to operate upon her.

The patient's family lodged a complaint with the Beniapukur police station Monday night demanding action against two doctors and DNA tests to verify if the girl was raped and murdered.

The hospital authorities, however, said the patient died due to an overdose of anaesthesia.

West Bengal Health Minister Surya Kanta Mishra ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter to find out whether there was any negligence in her treatment and later rubbished the rape allegation in the state assembly.

Khan earlier said: "The incident is very pathetic and there should be an independent probe. We demand a DNA test and post mortem of the victim.

"If nothing fishy had happened then why are the two doctors missing? They should be arrested immediately," Khan said.
