NEW YORK: For a retired president, Bill Clinton keeps a frenetically busy schedule. This fall, he will go on tour to promote his new book Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World. Alfred A Knopf will come out with an initial print run of 7,50,000 copies and Clinton will narrate the Random House audio book version, said prodigiously talented Indian-born publisher Sonny Mehta who is the chairman and editor-in-chief of New York-based Knopf.

“I’ve done my best in this book to demonstrate what I’ve seen firsthand through my Foundation’s work in Africa and around the world: that all kinds of giving can make a profoundly positive difference,” said President Clinton in a statement.

According to Knoph, the book highlights the remarkable stories of a number of “extraordinary people and organisations — some famous, as well as many private citizens whom readers will be hearing about for the first time — all of whom represent a global floodtide of non-governmental nonprofit activity.”

The book on citizen activism will hit US bookstores on September 4, and it is realistic to expect a few Indians to feature in Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World as the William J Clinton Foundation is active in Africa, India and other parts of the world.
Mehta, who has made a name for himself by spotting talent and bidding for the right manuscripts in New York’s competitive literary auctions, is likely to see steady sales with the newest Clinton book.

Financial terms for Giving have not been disclosed, although Clinton received roughly $12 million for his 2004 memoir My Life, which was published by Knoph and sold 2.2 million hardcover copies and 5,00,000 in paperback.

Mehta can’t realistically expect Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World to match My Life, but he believes in the new book’s inspirational message. “Clinton’s new book suggests that all of us can have a profound influence on the lives of others through acts of giving. I believe this book has the power to change both our outlook and our communities, and it will make a real contribution towards turning the world into a better place,” said Mehta.
