The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and Intelligence Bureau (IB) may step up efforts to trace the alleged key 11/7 plotter Raheel Shaikh, who is said to be hiding in the UK.
Sources said nabbing Raheel, a software engineer, became significant in the light of the emerging links between the Glasgow car-bomb plot and the role of the two Bangalore brothers — Kafeel Ahmed and Sabeel Ahmed.
Raheel has an Interpol red corner notice against him after Indian security agencies approached the global police watchdog.
Sources said the Bangalore police had already informally sought information about Muzammil and Raheel from their Mumbai counterparts. Muzammil, Raheel’s brother, had worked in Bangalore for two months after migrating to Mumbai from Pune.
It is learnt that Raheel needed to be traced as he operates on a global scale and may have some “stake” in the botched UK bombing plots. According to ATS sources, Raheel is a close “associate” of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba anti-India operations chief Azaam Cheema.
Both Cheema and Raheel are said to have played pivotal role in drawing up the commuter trains blasts blueprint. Raheel’s brother Faizal is also believed to be LeT’s western India operations chief.
“However, at this stage there is no solid evidence to suggest any direct link between Raheel and Muzammil with Kafeel,” said a senior ATS official.
Sources said Raheel may have also played a key role in “uniting” LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammad operatives ahead of 11/7. SIMI was the other group which was involved in the blasts conspiracy.
The Mumbai trains blasts are unique in a sense that at least three terrorist groups of diverse ideological streaks had come together to orchestrate “one single act of terror.”
