The Opposition leader calls on blast victims and  kin in Kandivali

“The Prime Minister recently reportedly said he spent a “sleepless night” at the plight of the families of those Indian nationals suspected to be involved in the failed UK terror attack. Let him hear your pain (11/7) blast victims). One has not heard of the PM having spent sleepless nights on the plight of 11/7 or any of the other terrorist attacks that have taken place in the last three years. To say the least, the PM’s statement was unfortunate. It was tantamount to appeasement of terrorism,’’ said Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani.

But what stirred the gathering of 11/7 blast victims and their kin at Malad was the innocent face of 10-month-old Prachiti Sawant whose father lies in coma at Hinduja Hospital. He is unaware of the birth of his daughter. So moved was Advani that he immediately picked up the tiny tot in his arms.

A sobbing Sunita Jaiswal, a widow, made an impassioned plea to the gathering to help meet the expenses of her youngest boy.

Advani’s call for helping the widow in distress was quickly addressed by BJP corporator Yogesh Sagar who said he would bear the cost of the boy’s operation. Her emotional appeal was met with angry jeers from other victims and their families. A few NGOs and philanthropists, too, came forward to bear the cost to provide artificial limbs and hearing aids.

Referring to the plight of Sunita Jaiswal, Advani said it was not an isolated case. Such incidents need to be followed up and the follow-up itself is the most difficult part. He assured the victims and their families that he would take up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He also said he would request to the PM to take steps to give them compensation and rehabilitation before August 15.

Talking on the demand for Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad to come to Mumbai and hold a darbar to listen to the woes of victims and their families, he said that one cannot exactly feel the pain of the families and victims through media reports. Earlier, Advani paid homage to the deceased victims at Bhayander railway station. He also called on the family of Parag Sawant at Kandivali. In a statement, he said, “The UPA government has neither the will nor the clarity to fight terrorism.”
