LAHORE: While confirming the presence of its jehadi veterans in Lal Masjid, the acting chief of the banned terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) has disowned them saying those holed up inside the mosque along with Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi are disgruntled elements of the group.

Approached for comments, Mufti Abdul Rauf, the younger brother of Maulana Masood Azhar and the acting chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad confirmed intelligence reports that many of the armed militants still inside the Red Mosque were affiliated to the Jaish.

He, however, said he disowns them  as they are siding with a criminal—Abdul Rasheed Ghazi—whose recent violent actions have brought a bad name to Islam.

Interestingly, however, Mufti Abdul Rauf’s stance seems to be a dramatic U-turn taken by the Jaish, which had earlier been supportive of the two cleric brothers.

Mufti further termed Lal Masjid’s top clerics as ‘lackeys’ of the government and held them responsible for the killings that took place during the exchange of fire and demanded to bring them to justice.

He further accused the government of patronising Lal Majid clerics and said they accumulated heavy weapons with the connivance of authorities.

Coincidentally, Jaish has withdrawn support after the government turned all its guns towards the Ghazi brothers. Earlier Jaish had supported the Lal Masjid’s act of Shariah enforcement and said it had all the best wishes for them.

“Our disgruntled people have joined them and we can’t even think of extending armed support to the Ghazi brothers,” said Mufti Abdul Rauf.
