BANGALORE: The kin of Mohammed Haneef, an Indian doctor who is detained by the Australian police for his alleged link in the UK terror plot, have sought for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s help to meet Haneef.

“We appreciate the PM’ reaction to our pain. It shows how sensitive he is to the concerns of the people,” said Haneef’s father-in-law, Ashwaq Ahmed.

“We used to meet Sabeel (another suspect held in UK) while he was in the UK. He used to come and visit us often. He is a very friendly, outgoing and helpful,” said Haneef’s wife Firdous.

An engineer doing his PhD, Kafeel had called up his family a day before the attack and said he would not be in touch with them for a week. According to sources, in his last conversation Kafeel claimed to be working on a confidential project on global warming. On June 30, Kafeel called from Iceland to say the earlier presentation had failed and asked them to pray for him. Police believe these were references to the terror plot.

Kafeel flew to UK three years back to do a PhD at Anglia Polytechnic University in the Department of Design and Technology, said his neighbours in Bangalore.
