More than 500 seats are going vacant in traditional courses such as BA, BCom and BSc, as students are making a beeline to get admission to professional courses. As a result, many city colleges are left with vacant seats to be filled. Observing this problem, the University has decided to extend the admission date for degree courses till July 14.

“We received a circular on Friday informing us to extend the date for admission of FYBcom. We already have 62 vacant seats and have put out a waiting list. We will give admissions to students who approach us before July 14,” said Dr Kapse, principal of Sydenham College. He further added that the university had sent the circular after a lot of delay.

“Everyday, students from other states have been coming here to inquire about vacant seats, but with the university giving instructions at such a late date, students have just one week to seek admission.”

Dr MB Kekare, principal of Kirti College said, “We presently have 260 seats vacant in FYBsc. I am happy with the decision to extend the admission date, but I fear there will be no takers for traditional courses. The problem is very acute and there will be lot of surplus teachers this year.”

“Principals of several colleges had requested for an extension as seats were going vacant. The main reason for the vacancies is the delay in the admission to professional courses. This will help colleges fill up vacant seats as well as those students who did not get admission to any college,” said Dr Venkatramani, registrar of the University of Mumbai.

While the problem of vacant seats is acute in some colleges, colleges like Mithibai and Kelkar had taken precautionary measures expecting such problem. “There are around 100 cancellations in Bsc and FYBA. But expecting this problem, we had admitted more students than usual.

However, I expect some vacant seats in the next two weeks as admissions to professional courses are still going on,” said Dr Kiran Mangaokar, principal of Mithibai College.
