Water-borne diseases leptospirosis and dengue made their entry into the city on Friday. BMC hospitals admitted two suspected cases (one each) of the dreaded disease in the last 24 hours.

At least four more patients (two suspected lepto and two suspected dengue) had been admitted to private hospitals, said BMC officials.

According to executive health officer Jairaj Thanekar, one case of suspect lepto was reported at Lilavati Hospital and a case of suspect dengue at Ameya Orthopaedic Centre in Borivli. Two other nursing homes reported other cases.

Unconfirmed reports say Kunal Trivedi, 22, a Borivli resident, died of dengue on Thursday.

Trivedi was admitted to the Karuna Hospital in Borivli. He also suffered from brain haemorrhage. Thanekar, however, remained non-comittal. He said the hospital would seek a second opinion on whether the death was because of dengue.

Meanwhile, at least 254 new cases with monsoon-related diseases were admitted to municipal hospitals in the last 24 hours. Among these, 144 cases were admitted with fever, 84 with gastroenteritis and 24 with malaria.

In the last five days, the civic hospitals reported 815 cases of monsoon-related diseases. Officials from the health department said 205 of these were discharged after treatment.

Medical practitioners projected a further rise in such cases after July 9. According to Dr SN Acharya, the incubation period for the virus is usually seven to 10 days after the first spell of rains.

“If not treated, the patient could develop kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, and respiratory distress and it could prove fatal,” he added.

Direction (Medical Education and Health) DR SG Damle said, “Civic hospitals were geared up to tackle monsoon related cases.”
