BJP vice president apprehends Mithi flooding, when Vihar, Powai and Tulsi lakes overflow

State BJP vice president, Dr Kirit Somaiya on Thursday demanded criminal action against all officials, who despite repeated warning, failed to properly carry out the desilting work of the Mithi river which claimed five lives in the recent flooding at Kurla.

Speaking to newspersons at state party office, he expressed apprehension that with the Vihar, Powai and Tulsi lakes overflowing, there could be further casualties down Mithi stream if the city experiences another heavy downpour.

The BJP ex-MP said the government has failed to understand that the Mithi river is not a major nullah. The river takes up to 80 per cent of the water flow from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivili and the three lakes of Vihar, Powai and Tulsi. Somaiya added that even normal desilting work has not been done by the MMRDA. He termed the claims made by the MMRDA of removing 2.69 lakh cubic meter of silt misleading.

Referring to the demand for an inquiry into the Mithi silt removal scam by a ruling UPA alliance MP, Somaiya disclosed that even the CAG too in its recent report had called for a high-level inquiry into the desilting work. He said that contrary to figures quoted by MMRDA of dumping silt at BMC’s Kanjurmarg dumping ground, the BMC officials revealed that the Kanjurmarg ground received less than 20,000 cubic meter of silt.

The BJP ex-MP wanted to know where the MMRDA dumped all the silt excavated by it. Somaiya stated that the June 30 flooding between Saki Naka and Airport junction was due to the shoddy work done by the MMRDA.
