Firing near Akshardham temple in Delhi, one killed

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old man was arrested after he along with two other people allegedly shot dead a man near Akshardham temple in east Delhi on Wednesday, police said.

According to police, the assailants stopped the victim near a traffic signal in Mayur Vihar Phase-I area at around 4.00 p.m. and tried to rob him. But when he protested they fired at him.

The victim, who is yet to be identified, was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police said that the victim, who was carrying a large amount of cash, was travelling in an auto-rickshaw. He received two bullet injuries.

Meanwhile, passers-by caught hold of one of the assailants while his two accomplices managed to escape on a motorbike. Police have recovered the weapon used in the crime.

Angry people, who gathered after the incident, roughed up the accused, before handing him over to the police. Police said the accused was taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination.

"Initial investigations suggest that robbery was the motive behind the firing. The accused were keeping a tab on the victim's movement," a senior police official said.

"We have blocked all roads connecting to Mayur Vihar, Noida and Akshardham temple to apprehend the other two accused," he added.
