Nearly 2700 die of Encephalitis in UP

Close to 2700 people have died of dreaded Japanese Encephalitis in 35 districts of Uttar Pradesh since 2002 and as many as 10,414 people were afflicted.

LUCKNOW: Close to 2700 people have died of dreaded Japanese Encephalitis in 35 districts of Uttar Pradesh since 2002.
      
As many as 10,414 people were afflicted with the disease since 2002, UP Health Minister Anant Kumar told the state assembly on Wednesday.
     
Of them, 2667 died, he said in reply to a question. Since the beginning of this year, 32 people have succumbed to the disease, the House was informed.
     
The Minister said the state government has taken all necessary steps to tackle the situation.
     
Nearly 95 lakh children aged between one and 15 years have been vaccinated against the disease since the beginning of the year, he said.
     
An Encephalitis ward and a viral research centre are being set up in Gorakhnpur, the epicentre of the disease, in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Minister said.
