NAGPUR: A special court here has sentenced a girl student to eight years of rigorous imprisonment (RI), besides a fine of Rs 50,000, for tampering with her marklist to secure admission to the Bachelor of Education (BEd) course in 1999.

The sentence was handed down to Umeshwari Dnyaneshwar Khante nee Durve by Special Judge A S Gattani on Monday, who was hearing a bunch of cases pertaining to the revaluation scam and fake marklists and degrees scandal that rocked Nagpur University, several years ago.

Prosecution said Umeshwari, who had applied for admission, tampered her marklist of final year Bachelor of Arts examination at four places to show an increase in her marks in three subjects from 56 to 66, 54 to 64 and 51 to 61, and a rise of 30 marks in the total from 250 to 280, thus gaining a place in the merit list. At that time, admissions to BEd course were given solely on the basis of marks scored in the final year of the degree examination.

However, the scrutiny committee got suspicious as Umeshwari had forgotten to show a corresponding increase of 30 marks from 796 to 826 in the grand total of her score for the examinations of all the three years, it said.

The fraud was detected when the scores shown on the marklist were tallied with the final tabulation register, it said.

The university authorities then filed a criminal complaint with the police. During the trial, Umeshwari denied all allegations and pleaded ignorance about the tampering in her marklist. However, on the basis of the evidence, including the opinion of a handwriting expert, the court found her guilty under sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Umeshwari has become the second girl to be convicted in a case pertaining to the revaluation scam and fake marklists and degrees scandal.

Earlier, Vandana Jumale had been convicted in a  related case. Umeshwari's was also the eighth case pertaining to the scandal to be decided by the court.
