State board wants to ensure that their students do not lag behind

The trend of CBSE and ICSE students scoring much more than SSC students still continues, but the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is trying its best to change this. While the Mumbai division topper scored 95.07 per cent in the SSC exams  this year, the topper in the ICSE examination secured 97.6 per cent and his CBSE counterpart secured 98 per cent.

SSC board students and parents are under pressure to perform better to compete with their students from other boards, who generally take away the top seats during admissions to junior colleges. However, the SSC board results are comparatively better than last year’s with the pass percentage increasing by 8.2 per cent.

The state board is making efforts to ensure that students of their board score as much as those from other boards. This year, the number of students who have received distinction has also increased. The board has also shown leniency towards students by giving them 30 marks in algebra and geometry due to confusion over some questions in both subjects. Apart from this, students under the sports quota sports have been given 25 additional marks.

Educationalists say that it is difficult to find students from ICSE or CBSE who have not scored above 80 per cent, while the number of students scoring between 92 and 95 per cent has also gone up. This year, a number of students from the SSC board have also risen in standards when it comes to marks.

In order to lift percentages, the board is following different methods that the CBSE and ICSE boards follow. Father Almeida, principal of Father Agnel’s School said though percentages have risen this year, “I think it will go up even more next year as the board is including oral examinations for language subjects,” he said.
