BELFAST: Ireland captain Trent Johnston won the toss and elected to field against South Africa in the one-day international at Stormont here on Sunday.

Rain, which delayed the start by nearly five hours, had reduced this match to a 31 overs per side contest.

Ireland made one change to the side that suffered a nine-wicket defeat against India here on Saturday with batting all-rounder Alex Cusack making his debut in place of Gary Wilson.

South Africa handed one-day international debuts to Vernon Philander, on the all-rounder's 22nd birthday, and off-spinner Thandi Tshabalala.

This was South Africa's first one-day international since a seven-wicket World Cup semi-final defeat against eventual champions Australia in St Lucia in April.

That month also saw South Africa beat Ireland in the World Cup, the Proteas winning by seven wickets in Georgetown, Guyana. South Africa also won a warm-up match against Ireland in Trinidad.

For this match the Proteas were captained by all-rounder Jacques Kallis with regular skipper Graeme Smith recovering from knee surgery in South Africa.

Fast bowler and former skipper Shaun Pollock had been rested from this trip while batsman Ashwell Prince had been dropped. South Africa are due to play India in three one-day internationals at Stormont on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday of next week.
