NEW DELHI: The top three hospitals of Delhi have turned into mosquito breeding grounds, including the reputed All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), forcing the civic authorities to issue challans against the hospitals. Apart from AIIMS, the other two prominent public hospitals under scrutiny are the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and the Safdarjung hospital.

Civic officials also informed that some other institutions taken to task were the Delhi High Court, Patiala House Court and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

“Our field teams had gone to these hospitals for a routine check when they found mosquito breeding grounds in these hospitals,” said a senior officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). “The sad part of these routine checks is that these institutions do not care for hygiene,” said the officer.

Officials said that this was not the first time that AIIMS has been penalised for the menace because last year too the civic authorities had found mosquito breeding grounds at the hospital.

“We have issued a challan and a fine on the offense would be announced by the court. These challans are sent to the court and the hospitals would not only have to pay an amount but would also have to give an undertaking that similar breeding grounds would not be allowed in the hospital premises again,” the officer elaborated.

The officer added that they are purposely targeting these institutions because they want to send a message to the people that nobody would be spared for breeding mosquito.

Other than some of the top institutions in the capital, the MCD has also issued 1,200 similar notices to people while the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has issued 125 notices in the past two days.

Just before the start of the summer months in the capital, the Delhi government had issued orders to the MCD directing them to take strict action against those found guilty of breeding mosquitoes.
