BANGKOK: Indians put up a commendable display capturing three golds in a total haul of 12 medals in the first leg of the 2007 Asian Athletics Grand Prix here on Tuesday.

Sunil Kumar led an Indian 1-2 in the men's 3,000m while Sinimol Paulose came up well clear of the field in the women's 1,500m.

Renjith Maheshwary upset several fancied names to prevail in men's triple jump to bring a third gold for India.

Sunil Kumar bettered his personal best as he came home in 8:00.76 seconds, just ahead of compatriot Surendra Singh who also gave his best ever performance (8:00.86s).

Boonthung Srisung claimed the bronze medal in his season's best of 8:17.89s.

Paulose was clearly the best runner on view in her event as she clocked 4:12.61s to finish way ahead of Kazakhstan's Svetlana Lukasheva, who could not match the Indian despite a season's best of 4:20.98s.

Sushma brought another medal for India finishing third in 4:25.51s.

Maheshwary was expected to face severe competition in one of the toughest line-ups in men's triple jump. The field included Doha Asian Games gold medallist Li Yanxi from China, silver winner Roman Valiyev of Kazakhstan and China's former Asian Indoor champion and season leader Zhu Shujing.

However, the Indian showed his mettle clearing a distance of 16.68m in his second jump which was too good for other competitors.

Valiyev claimed the silver at 16.45m ahead of Syria's Mohamad Al Hazoury (16.37m). Amarjeet Singh had his season's best effort of 16.24m to finish fifth.

India's Chatholi Hamza put up his personal best but missed out on the gold in men's 1500m. He clocked 3:40.19s to settle for silver behind Iran's Sajad Moradi (3:39.04s), who also achieved his personal best.

India's Sajeesh Joseph (3:44.03s) claimed the bronze.

Top discus thrower Vikas Gowda could not repeat his herculean effort of 64.96m in the United States last month and had to be content with a silver with an effort of 60.14m behind Iran's Samimi Abbas (62.61m).

Abbas was the silver medallist at the 2002 Busan Asian Games and was fourth at the 2006 Games in Doha.

Saurabh Vij won silver in shot put registering an attempt of 17.82m as Kuwait's Ahmed Gholum (18.56, SB) claimed top honours. Another Indian, Satyendra Kumar Singh (16.07m) finished fifth.

Hari Shankar Roy could only clear 2.14m in the high jump to settle for bronze.

Kazakhstan's Sergey Zassimovich set a new Asian Grand Prix record when he cleared 2.30m to claim gold. Roy missed out on the silver to Korean Young-Min Kim who also jumped 2.14m but finished second as he needed fewer attempts to clear the height.

K M Binu and M R Poovamma had to settle for bronze in the men's and women's 400m respectively.

Binu clocked 46.97s to finish behind Liangyu Wang (China, 45.95) and Prasanna Amarasekara (Sri Lanka, 46.48).

Poovamma (55.30s) trailed the Kazakh duo of Olga Tereshkova (53.55) and Tatyana Kahadjimuratov (53.65).

Among other Indians, Kuldev Singh was fourth in 400m hurdles (51.14s), Anuradha Biswal was fifth in 100m hurdles (14.87s).
