DULLUT: Two persons were killed and more than 30 injured, some of them seriously, in a powerful bomb explosion triggered on Wednesday by suspected ULFA militants at the weekly market in this town near Guwahati.

Police said the bomb, attached to a bicycle, exploded at around one pm, just an hour before the market was to open, killing one person instantly. The other succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital.

Most of the injured were small traders arranging their wares for sale and buyers who had come to the market in lower Assam's Kamrup district from nearby Hajo town. The injured were admitted to hospital.

Senior police and civil officials at the spot said the toll would have been higher had the blast occurred during the working hours of the market.
