If the Delhi government's plans go well, the Capital could get more than 100 flyovers by the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This thought is feared by road and traffic experts, who believe these constructions could make roads unsafe and waste funds.

"We want to beautify the city and there would be more than 100 flyovers in Delhi by the start of the Commonwealth Games," said AK Walia, the Finance and PWD minister of Delhi. "These flyovers would not only make commuting in Delhi hassle free but also a lot faster," said the minister, adding that these flyovers were the need of the hour. However, traffic experts believe that the state government's plan lacks holistic approach.

"These constructions are mainly being done near the Games area and I believe these flyovers will not be of much use after the games are over," said Amandeep Bedi, traffic planner at the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE).

Bedi further said that these constructions are not only a waste of precious funds but that they would also help vehicles travelling at a faster speed leading to more accidents.

Officials of the Delhi government informed that there are already 42 flyovers in the capital and another 11 flyways are in the pipeline. "Four flyovers have been inaugurated in the past few months after the existing government completed four years in office," said a senior official.

"A total of 58 new flyovers would be constructed in the next three years," added the officer.

The officer added that these flyovers were needed because of the increasing pressure on Delhi roads.

"There are 50 lakh vehicles in Delhi and another 8 lakh vehicles come in everyday from the adjoining cities," said the officer.

"These constructions are being made to ease traffic on Delhi roads at least for a few years after 2010 Commonwealth Games," the officer added.

"The important question which these officials should ask is the need of these flyovers. It seems that the state government thinks that the only solution to these traffic problems are flyovers," said Bedi.
