Raima Sen gets candid on her unconventional appeal, fights with sis Riya and marriage plans

What is your role in Aparna Sen’s ‘Japanese Wife’ with Rahul Bose?
I’m playing a widow who is the mother of an eight-year-old son. She approaches Rahul for help.

How was it working with Rahul?
Rahul is a studied actor. I have worked with him in the Bengali film ‘Arunnan’. Hence, we share a comfort level.

You are playing an NRI Bengali in the ‘Bong Connection’. How typical a Bengali are you?
I love fish and I do have most of the Bengali characteristics. But I do not celebrate all the Bengali festivals. In that case, I am not a typical Bengali.

After the hit number ‘Sajna ji vari vari’ (‘Honeymoon Travels Ltd’) to your credit, are you now open to doing stage shows and item numbers?
I will be performing on ‘Sajnaji vari vari’ at the IIFA. I’d like to do item numbers if they are presented well and offered by a good director.

Now that you have shifted your base to Mumbai are you getting more work?
Yes, I have got more opportunities after shifting to Mumbai. It is difficult to co-ordinate things from Calcutta.

You have a traditional charm as opposed to your sister’s glam looks. Does it work for or against you?
So far it has worked for me. I like the roles that are offered to me. I will definitely love to do glamorous roles too if they come my way.

What do you and your sister Riya Sen fight over?
Clothes! I love her wardrobe. She is more stylish than I am. Hence I am always borrowing and stealing her clothes. Sometimes my mom (Moon Moon Sen) has to ask me to stop altering her clothes to suit my size.

What is your survival mantra?
To be patient and never give up.

Is marriage on the cards?
Not really, but if I find the right person I don’t mind tying the knot after three years.

What is your idea of a perfect mate?
I am not romantic. I haven’t thought of what qualities my man should possess. He must have a good sense of humour though.
