DUBAI: The west Asian region remained the top destination for India's consumer electronics goods last year with exports doubling to USD 175 million in 2005-06, from USD 90 million of 2004-05. The UAE, the hub for re-exports in the region, has seen the major exports push.

"Many of the companies are exporting to the UAE and from here they are re-exporting to Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries," Kamal Vachani, regional director of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) said.

"The region remained the top destination since 2000-01. Before that Singapore, Hong Kong and other South Asian countries were the top destinations," Vachani said.

Annual export growth in consumer electronics during the past five years is estimated at 27.33 per cent. Colour televisions remained the top export in 2005-06 as well. In value terms, exports increased to USD 190 million from USD 93.25 million in 2004-05. They were mainly exported to Italy and the UAE.

Exports of clocks and watches also registered record growth of 143 per cent to become the second-ranking item last year.

"We expect much bigger growth as the consumer electronics exports are on the rise from India, particularly colour televisions. Many OEMs in the UAE are importing their requirements from India and are keeping India as one of their major suppliers for CCTVs besides China," he told the Gulf News.
