725 trucks, to be used for collecting solid waste, will be fully covered

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corportion (BMC)’s Solid Waste Management department is introducing 725 new eco-friendly, fully covered garbage removal trucks to remove the solid waste the city produces daily. These new vehicles have been contracted to private agencies.

The contract will start by June 1, 2007. Private agencies have been given a nine-month mobilisation period for the contract to start and to end it by May 31, 2008. The contract will commence in all municipal wards except parts of H-East (Santacruz),  K-East (Vile Parle), and K-West (Andheri), where area-based contract tender has been invited. This will be finalised soon.

Says RA Rajeev, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City ) “We have already introduced these new vehicles in 11 out of 21 wards under this contract. 10 more wards will commence work by June 1, 2007. In the three wards — G – North (Dadar), F - South (Parel) & F – North (Matunga) — due to non-availability of Euro III chassis in time, it took sometime for the contractors to build the compactors but this contract will also start from June 15, 2007 for which the contractor will be fined for a delay.

The DNA had on Tuesday reported that the garbage trucks were lying idle at the Deonar dumping ground, as the civic body was yet to decide the routes they would be plying on.
