NEW DELHI: The 1,250-hectare Navi Mumbai special economic zone (SEZ), promoted by Mukesh Ambani and his associate Anand Jain, which was held up due to Customs objections, will come up before the SEZ Board of Approval (BoA) again on Thursday, along with 39 other SEZ proposals.

The BoA will also take up for “formal approval” the 1,173-hectare multi-purpose SEZ of the Tatas at Gopalpur in Orissa. The proposal which had come before the board in September last was stuck because of lack on security clearance.

The Navi Mumbai SEZ proposal had been considered by the BoA at a meeting earlier this month, but revenue officials had raised apprehensions of revenue leakage from the SEZ, as the parcels of land acquired for the purpose were not “contiguous”. A network of rail lines and roads crisscrossed through the area and customs had sought to ensure that there are adequate underpasses, overbridges and fencing to secure the SEZ.

A team of customs officials have already inspected the site and held discussions with the promoters and other agencies. The BoA will take a final view on the proposal tomorrow.

The Gopalpur SEZ proposal of the Tatas had been deferred in September last because the BoA wanted to ensure that it posed no problem to a security facility nearby.  Of the other proposals to come up before BoA, 28 are reported to have acquired the necessary land and are due for formal approval. Many of these proposals are carry-over from the previous meeting of the BoA.
