Javed Miandad warns Indian cricket Board against hiring Dav Whatmore as coach

MUMBAI: Javed Miandad is critical of Indian cricket board’s obsession for a foreign coach. The Pakistan great thinks BCCI would be committing a blunder by hiring Dav Whatmore. “An Indian would do a better job,” he told DNA in an exclusive interview from Karachi.

“What is the message the BCCI is sending out? That no Indian is capable. It is an insult to the great former Indian players. Isn’t a Gavaskar just as capable?” Miandad said. “What can Whatmore tell a Sachin Tendulkar or a Rahul Dravid about batting? He will be a failure like Greg Chappell.”

Miandad said the BCCI’s ‘foreign’ hangover is ridiculous. “In that case why have a cricket team. Ban cricket in India. You aren’t producing world beaters, nor are you producing coaches you think will be good to handle your team. So why play the game?”

The former Pakistan captain says a foreign coach is unlikely to make much difference. “Get any foreign coach, come 2011, the situation will not be any different. It was Bangladesh this time. It could be China that sends India packing then.”

The Pakistani legend, known for his abrasive style, even dismissed Indian team’s success under John Wright. “In the last 7-8 years you have tried foreign coaches. Has there been a revolution? Under Wright you saw success but things were back to square one once he left. If bringing a foreign coach was such a brilliant idea, India would have been World Champions twice over. Are they?”

He cited the example of Australia, who haven’t had a foreign coach. “The way they play the game is quite different from the rest. Only an Australian can understand that. Similarly, the way an Indian plays is a lot different from the rest and only an Indian can understand that. At this level, you don’t need to teach a player basics. If you have to do that, then there is something wrong with the system.”

He goes on: “A coach has to have an understanding of the game and his players and should be a good planner. He just needs to fine-tune and show the team the right direction.”

Miandad was also dismissive of video analysis and scientific approach. “I don’t think coaching is about computers, scientific approaches and drawing boards. If such were the case — Bill Gates would have been Bradman and Japan and China would have had the best cricket teams in the world.”

Miandad further reproached the Indian cricket administration saying, “If the board’s approach is like that, what are Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly going to do after they retire? These players, who have been the best during their time, would again be told off and foreign coaches would be brought to coach the Indian team. Imagine the situation — you have a Dravid in your backyard and you get a Justin Langer to coach the team.”
