MUMBAI: The Board has finally found a sponsor. After finding its tenders unanswered, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has struck a deal with Pantaloon-owned Future Group to sponsor the India-South Africa series in Ireland and India-Pakistan friendly in Scotland. The series and the match will now be played for the Future Cups.

As per the arrangement, the BCCI will get about $600,000 per match — for the title and ground hoardings — substantially less than what it had got for the last off-shore series in Malaysia (in September 2006 during which it was estimated to be about $1 million per match).

But vice-president Lalit Modi, the man behind the series, said the sponsorship money is up to the Board’s expectations.

India and South Africa will play the three ODIs on June 26, 29 and July 1, and India and Pakistan will play the friendly in Scotland on July 3. Zee Sports will telecast the matches.

The significant feature of the deal is that the company will have exclusive advertising rights on the ground — which means unlike a spectrum of hoardings this time only the Groups’ brands will be on the field. “We’re happy with the deal we’ve struck with Future Group. This is the first time ever in India that a corporate has taken up the complete commercial rights for a series,” Modi said.

The Board is expected to make money up to Rs 65 crores from the series — including the television rights — while the South African team will be richer by about $3 million and the Irish Cricket Board will earn up to $1.5 million.

Commenting on the deal, secretary Niranjan Shah said the Board is happy with the arrangement.

“Given the market situation and under the circumstances we’re fairly happy with the sponsorship deal. We can expect a profit of about Rs 65 crores from the matches,” he said. The proceeds of the friendly match will go to Prince Charles’ charity fund.
