LONDON: Troubled British pop star George Michael admitted he is addicted to prescription drugs in an interview to be aired on Saturday.

The singer also said his sex life was good enough to outweigh the bad press received for being caught allegedly 'cruising' for gay sex with strangers.

The world would be a better place to live if more people smoked cannabis than drank alcohol, he added.

The 43-year-old put his string of erratic antics in recent years down to a 'self-destructive tendency' brought on since his mother died in 1997.

Former Wham! frontman Michael has pleaded guilty to being unfit to drive through drugs after being found slumped at the wheel of his car in London in October.

Explaining what caused the incident, Michael told ITV television, "It involves prescribed drugs and it involves a dependency on them, and the tendency to chase one drug with another because of side effects."

"Ultimately I didn't break the law. I did something stupid, and doing something irresponsible is not a position that I am normally used to defending myself in," Michael said according to excerpts of the interview released in advance.

He added that he could not say more due to ongoing legal proceedings. Michael will be sentenced on May 30.

Last July, Michael defended 'cruising' for gay sex after a high-profile expose allegedly caught him out at a well-known London pick-up spot.

The singer plays a second straight night today in Aarhus, Denmark, on his 25 Live European tour that will see him become the first artist to play the new 90,000-seater Wembley Stadium in London, something he described as a 'dream come true.'
