A silent revolution seems to be in progress in the film production business. If the number of international film projects scheduled to be shot all over India is any indication, the country is slowly becoming a potentially large outsourcing destination for Hollywood.

Producers, who have successfully managed to market India as an attractive shooting location for film studios abroad, are now snapping up deals that facilitate international film shoots in the country.

“With its huge talent base, cost-effective labour and varied geographical terrain, India is becoming an important outsourcing hub for international film ventures,” says Mahaveer Singh Shaktawat, who heads the Mumbai chapter of ‘On The Road Productions’, a company that provides a range of services to international film studios including scouting for locations, arranging for local technicians and equipment, and obtaining government permissions.

The subcontinent is all set to make appearances in several Hollywood films including the Angelina Jolie starrer ‘A Mighty Heart’ and ‘Marigold’ where Bollywood hunk Salman Khan plays the leading man. “Marigold is my way of bridging the gap between Indian and American cinema,” says director Willard Caroll who shot his film in Mumbai, Goa and Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, the Walt Disney Company is also scheduled to shoot a historical in Delhi and northern India by the end of the year.

“The project has been finalized though they are still looking for a director,” says Bollywood art director Nitin Desai who has been hired by Disney to create a set at his Karjat studio. Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanovic will also be in India later in the year to scout not only for location but also for talent.

Though corruption and red-tapism threaten to spoil the experience for all concerned, line producers are expecting more international projects in the future.
