CHENNAI: Dayanidhi Maran, who quit as union IT minister after a family feud claimed the lives of three employees of Dinakaran daily last Wednesday, told reporters on Monday that he will remain an MP till the party asks him to relinquish the post. What he did not say is that he will get active in his family business of Sun Network which would now try to shake off its political tag.

The DMK, meanwhile, is planning to launch its own television channel under the aegis of the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Trust formed after chief minister M Karunanidhi’s family relinquished its 20 per cent share in the Sun Network in November last year. “It hurts me that my party chief doubts my integrity after someone misinformed him. I have not dreamt of bringing disrepute to my part,” Maran told a crowded press conference at his residence.

Sources in Sun Network, in which Dayanidhi Maran’s elder brother Kalanidhi Maran has majority stakes, said the media company would utilise more of the younger Maran’s “talent that saw millions of dollars of foreign investment coming to Tamil Nadu.”

“This (Maran’s ouster) is a blessing in disguise for Sun Network, which will utilise his managerial skills. This will help Sun Network get rid of its political stamp,” an insider said.

While the differences between the Maran family and the Karunanidhi family have been a fairly guarded secret, the younger Maran’s nemesis was a telephone call he made to a senior bureaucrat when the Dinakaran office was burning. “Stop the violence or else I will get your government dismissed,” Maran reportedly told the officer. Karunanidhi did not need another reason to give Maran the marching orders.

Maran quit as minister on Sunday after the DMK passed a resolution against him for indulging in “anti-party activities”. The development was triggered by an opinion poll published by the Kalanidhi Maran-owned Dinakaran daily that named Karunanidhi’s younger son MK Stalin over his elder brother MK Azhagiri as Karunanidhi’s political heir.

Soon after, Azhagiri’s henchmen attacked Dinakaran office in Madurai, killing three employees.
