NEW DELHI: Realising the gravity of the human trafficking case, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has called for an all-party meeting on Tuesday, even as two BSP MPs - Mitrasen Yadav and Ashok Rawat appeared before the probing team on Monday as “witnesses” in the case.

Two other MPs, who were also called for questioning, did not turn up and the sleuths are planning to again issue them notices.

“My client had received a notice from the police earlier. He was called as a witness and not an accused in the case,” said Harjot Singh, lawyer of BSP MP Ashok Rawat. The notice was served under section 160, Singh said.

He added that Yadav had gone to Singapore as part of a parliamentary delegation but he did not travel on individual basis. “We have also given details of his wife’s diplomatic passport, for the police to check their records,” he added.

Senior police officials said both Yadav and Rawat were cooperative during their questioning and had also brought their passports for verification of their foreign journeys.

“We have seized their passports and noted down details, and would verify them later,” said an official. “The two MPs are cooperating and we hope that the other two MPs would also come forward to help us in investigations,” he added.

Meanwhile, a group of MPs have demanded that Gujarat MP Babubhai Katara, who was arrested for trying to illegally fly a woman and her son to Canada, be suspended from the parliament.

The human trafficking case came to light on April 18 and six people have been arrested in the case so far. One of the accused Sunderlal Yadav, a close aide of Katara, had named BSP MPs Ashok Rawat, Mitrasen Yadav, Mohammed Tahir Khan and BJP MP from Bhayana (Rajasthan) Ramswarup Koli as part of the racket.
