MUMBAI: A businessman was robbed of 4 kg gold jewellery that he was carrying to the city from a northern suburb in the early hours on Sunday, police said.

Amrutlal Kagda, a gold jewellery manufacturer, was transporting the ornaments from his shop in suburban Dahisar to some contacts in the city in a car with two friends when the incident occurred, police said.

As they were travelling towards the city, a van blocked their way near Dahisar and six to seven people came out of it.

One of them struck Kagda with a chopper on his head, injuring him, and took away the jewellery while another man threatened the occupants of the car with a revolver, police said.

The robbers then boarded the van and sped away, they said.

Kagda was admitted to a local hospital, police added.
