NEW YORK: An Indian woman was killed in a hit-and-run in the driveway of her house in Long Island, a borough of New York.

Nina Sharma, a mother of three, decided to go for an after-dinner walk on Friday with her husband. When she stepped outside, Nina asked her husband to take the garbage bins from the side of the house and stood in the driveway waiting for him.

Raj, 45, remembers seeing a grey van hitting Nina and throwing her almost 65 feet down the street. The police have recovered pieces of a headlight belonging to a Chrysler or Dodge van sold somewhere between 1993 and 1997. There is so far no trace or identification available of the homicidal driver.

Nina was pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Centre at 12.17 a.m.

The couple had returned home from an evening meeting in Manhattan, where they finalised the lease for a place for their wholesale garments business. But Nina was not destined to live to see their business materialise.

Nina was born in Bangkok and had come to the US 10 years ago with her husband. They lived in Flushing, Queens, till last year, when they moved to their two-storey house in the upmarket East Meadow in Long Island.
