NEW DELHI: Parliament is likely to be adjourned sine die ahead of schedule, notwithstanding the contrary stand taken by the Centre on the issue.

As per the schedule released by the parliamentary secretariat, the budget session was to conclude on May 22, but there is growing speculation in political circles that it may end by May 15.

With the Finance Bill finding a smooth passage in the House, the government has already exhausted its official business and there is a likelihood of an early end to the current session. On Friday, the central government listed a series of legislations to be brought before the House by May 15. Sources are unwilling to commit themselves to the sessions carrying on after that.

With repeated adjournments plaguing the session, ministers said both Houses are hardly transacting any serious business.

But, the opposition does not buy this argument and feel that it’s a ruse for the UPA to adjourn Parliament prematurely, and allow itself elbow room after the UP elections.
“They are the ones who have not allowed Parliament to function in the last few days. It’s all a part of a strategy to first create the impression that no work is being done and then to adjourn both Houses,” says BJP leader Yashwant Sinha.
