COLOMBO: Sri Lanka on Monday imposed restrictions on domestic flying and banned its national carrier from using irrigation fields as landing base to deal with the threat of Tamil Tiger air attacks.

The country's international air port will be also closed at night for six hours from Thursday.

The military banned Sri Lanka's national carrier, Sri Lankan Airlines, from operating an amphibious Otter eight-seater aircraft on domestic routes using irrigation and hydro power reservoirs as a landing base.

The move was part of measures taken to deal with the threat of air attacks by Tamil Tiger rebels who demonstrated their air capability in March by using light aircraft to bomb targets here, government spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Tourists used the air-taxi service to travel to a golf course and upmarket resorts paying up to $200 each way.
