That’s what a bill introduced by the Karnataka government intends, but Mumbai women have just one word for the overzealous move — ridiculous!

The Karnataka government’s bill to ban women (except in the IT and hospital sector) from working after 8pm, supposedly to protect them, hasn’t gone down too well with the city’s fairer sex. Most feel this new rule is only adding to the gender discrimination Indian women have been facing down the ages.

Fumes model Sheetal Mallar, whose job very frequently involves late nights, “Ridiculous would be an understatement to something like this. If the problem was only night shifts, it should clearly be banned for men as well. They are all just looking for a reason to target women because they think nobody will fight against them. In a day and age like this, if mindsets don’t change, lawmakers will take anybody for granted.”

In a city like Mumbai where most jobs involve putting in long hours of work, most suspect that such a move by a single government may encourage others to follow their footsteps. “If the law really comes to force, who knows they may use the same formula in other cities in the name of stopping crime. I think it is extremely hypocritical to victimize women just because crimes against them are on the rise.  In fact, today in most jobs it is women who are getting more successful than men. Whose loss will it be then?” asks actor Neetu Chandra.

Asserts actor Sandhya Mridul, who stresses that she comes from Delhi where crimes rates at soaring heights, “I live in Versova and I agree that I do feel skeptical about my safety at times, but if I have to abide by such rules I might as well stop working. We live in a democracy and nobody has the right to dictate terms on anyone.”
