CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police on Thursday ordered a probe into alleged fake killing of some terrorists by the state police during the height of militancy in the state in 1980s.

"DGP N P S Aulakh ordered a fact finding inquiry and J P Birdi, Additional Director General of Police, will head the fact-finding team for conducting a thorough inquiry into the allegations of fake killings", an official spokesman said.

The state government has viewed with "concern" recent reports in a section of the media and considering the gravity of the issues involved, the inquiry has been initiated, the spokesman said.

"Certain specific instances were quoted in these news reports in which alleged terrorists, reportedly killed by police in encounters earlier, were said to be still alive. It has further been mentioned in these press reports that innocent persons were killed in place of such alleged terrorists", the spokesman said.

In an embarrassment to Punjab police in the recent past, a former 'terrorist' Jaspal Singh Bhatti, who was declared 'killed' in a police encounter in 1993, surfaced at his native Nangli village in Amritsar district.

Bhatti was the third man to surface after Gurnam Singh Bandala, a former terrorist, Gurcharan Singh Giani, younger brother of Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) Chief Surjit Singh Painta, who was reported killed in an encounter by Punjab Police.

Bandala was declared killed in a shootout near Ropar in 1993 while Gurcharan was reported dead in an encounter in 1994, official sources said.
