BHUBANESWAR: A eunuch tied the knot with a man on Sunday in the presence of hundreds of transsexuals from across Orissa who blessed the couple and danced to Hindi film songs.

The 'bride' was 33-year-old Anarkali, a eunuch, while the groom was 35-year-old Pinu Patnaik, who claimed to be a government employee.

"Though the local police did not issue the requisite permission for holding the marriage between a man and an eunuch, it made all arrangements for providing security when they tied nuptials", claimed All Orissa Eunuchs' Association secretary Pratap Sahu.
The Superintendent of Police of Khurda Amitabh Thakur said that the police was aware of the marriage between a eunuch and a man in the city.

"The marriage is certainly not legally acceptable. We are examining the matter", said Thakur adding that the police may take action, if one of the partners lodges complaints.

"We know this marriage is illegal according to existing laws. But eunuchs too have the right to live", Sahu argued.

The marriage contained all the ingredients of a traditional wedding ceremony. Eunuch priest Moti Bai from Cuttack was specially invited to conduct the rituals, Sahu said.

"This is for the first time that I conducted a marriage between an eunuch and a man", Moti Bai said adding that there was no fire burning in the middle where bride and groom take oath of marriage.

"They vowed before the Kukuta Devi, the goddess of eunuchs for living together", the priest said.

According to the association, the marriage was solmenised without dowry though the bride was clad with costly pata sari and gold and silver finery.

"The eunuchs from across the state donated money for the marriage feast. The people from different sections of society joined the marriage party", Sahu said.

Other eunuchs, who danced and sang, said the bride and groom were in "love" for the last six months. They met each other in a train.

"We were in love since then. But I had always discouraged Pinu from the idea of marrying an eunuch. I had also asked him to marry a girl and live like others. But he refused to accept my suggestion and persisted on our marriage", Anarkali said, adding that she took the matter to the "Hinjda samaj" which gladly accepted Pinu's proposal.

Pinu, though not sure whether his "unusual" marriage would put him in trouble in his government job, claimed that he had not committed any crime. "I do not think I have done any blunder. I have married a eunuch. If this is not legal, I am ready to accept any punishment", he said adding that he loved the person and was not worried about the gender.

Pinu, who hailed from Ganjam district, however, did not inform his family members regarding the marriage. "I know nobody would accept this marriage. Therefore, it is better not to invite them and invite trouble", he said.

"It was a great day for all the eunuchs across the state because a brave man has come forward to marry one of our sisters. We have reasons for revelry", said Kajol, a eunuch.
