KOLKATA: Expressing concern at the fresh violence in Nandigram, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday sought the Prime Minister's intervention to stop "atrocities" on people and said her party will organise a one-hour 'rasta roko' in West Bengal on Monday.

"We have already informed the Prime Minister's Office about the situation in Nandigram and sought his intervention to stop the unabated violence there," Banerjee said.

"Our MP Dinesh Tribedi will lead an NDA delegation to President A P J Abdul Kalam shortly to inform him about the happenings in Nandigram," she said.

Stating that her party will organise a 'rasta roko' (road blockade) from 11 am to 12 noon tomorrow, Banerjee appealed to all parties except the ruling CPI-M, irrespective of their ideology, to take to the streets to demand the restoration of peace in Nandigram.

Claiming that "police were helping the CPI-M in Nandigram and adjoining areas", she announced a series of programmes, including a gherao of all police stations in West Bengal on May two and meetings in all blocks to condemn the violence that left one dead on Sunday.

Asked why the Trinamool Congress or its allies were not participating in all-party meetings called by the East Midnapore district administration to restore peace in Nandigram, Banerjee retorted: "Why should we join the meeting when the government, which has called it, is itself sponsoring violence there?"

She also questioned why violence was continuing in Nandigram if a chemical hub was not to be set up there as stated by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. "Every day the people of Nandigram are attacked by CPI-M supporters from neighbouring Khejuri which is dominated by the ruling party," she claimed.
