Nine get RI for possessing fake currency

Delhi court on Saturday sentenced nine persons to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for possessing fake currendo five years' RI each and a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh.

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Saturday sentenced nine persons, including a Pakistani national, to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for possessing fake currendo five years' RI each and a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh for helping him in coaught Kamran Gauhar, Harjesh Narayan and Ajay Singh at ITO crossing with a face value of Rs 5.5 lakh of counterfeit currency.

Later the sleuths had, on August, 11, 2000, also recovered counterfeit notes to the tune of Rs 2.2 lakh from the alleged possession of Madhubala, Raju Sahni, Gagan Singh, Mumtaz Parveen, Trilok Chand and Irshad Ahmad. It also recovered two kilograms of RDX and a handgrenade from them.

"This is an organized crime and vitiates the economy of the country... The present case is an instance of pumping a sum of multi-lakhs into Indian economy," the Judge said.

They were convicted under section 489-B (using counterfeit currency as genuine) and 489-C (possession of forged counterfeit notes) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
