BANGALORE: A nine-year-old boy who fell into an open borewell in Karnataka's Raichur district was on Thursday found dead after a 55-hour operation to rescue him.

The body of Sandeep, which had started decomposing, was pulled out of the borewell in Neermanvi village in the district this evening, Additional Superintendent of Police P B Kitali said.

He fell into the abandoned borewell in an agricultural field at around noon on Tuesday and was stuck at a depth of about 40 feet.

A case of negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against the owner of the land on which the borewell is located, Kitali said.

Rescue teams continuously supplied oxygen through a pipe to Sandeep but he stopped responding to calls hours after he fell into the borewell, police said.

Teams of experts from Hutti gold mines were engaged in the operation since Tuesday afternoon to bring out Sandeep but had remained clueless on his fate until his body was found on Thursday evening.

Raichur Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Prasad said the body was in a decomposed state.

He said the body had been sent for post mortem and the exact cause of death would be known only after receiving the report.

Experts had dug a new parallel well, 40 feet in depth, to reach the boy at a distance of 15 feet from the borewell where he was trapped. A tunnel was also dug at the bottom of the new well to connect to the borewell.

According to footage shown on a local television channel, Sandeep seemed to be trapped in an uncomfortable position with his hands above his head.

A medial team was standing by round the clock to attend to the boy, as the villagers sat through the operation and prayed for Sandeep's wellbeing.

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy was in constant touch with district authorities on the fate of the boy, official sources said.

Speaking to reporters at Bellary, the chief minister, when asked why he did not visit the village, said his visit would have deflected the attention and affected the rescue operations.
