NEW DELHI: At a time when the BJP and the SP have used the CD to get their message across to their core constituencies, the Congress is sticking to more conventional methods. Party chief Sonia Gandhi is relying on the postal department to carry her message to the electorate of UP.
Muslims form over 16 per cent of the state’s electorate and are central to the Congress party’s plans of staging a comeback in the state. Till the 1980s, they were a part of the Congress party’s rainbow coalition, and have now shifted to the SP. The party’s political managers believe that unless they are wooed back into its fold, there is little chance of the party recapturing its lost ground in the state.
The Congress President had, on Monday, addressed a letter to the minorities in the state soliciting their vote and support for her party in the elections. The letter is in Urdu and has obviously been drafted by the minorities department of her party. The short missive has called on the electorate of the state to vote for her party candidates in the current elections to enable her and the Congress party to combat the forces of communalism and casteism.
The letter is in sharp contrast both in tone and tenor to the vitriolic CD distributed by the BJP or the vicious personal attacks that form a part of the SP’s CD doing the rounds in the state.
The letter is measured and restrained in the issues it raises as well as its appeal. Sonia has, in her letter, drawn attention to how as Congress president she has been consistently striving to strengthen the secular fabric of the country, and has sought the cooperation of Muslims to create a society where no community feels discriminated against.
“This task cannot be accomplished without your support and active cooperation,’’ she has said.
