MUMBAI: The city fire department has embarked on a complete computerisation programme and also equipping itself with the latest technology to reduce response time to disaster.

This will enable minimum response time for any disaster situation, chief fire officer Kiran Kadam said.

Computerisation will bring about significant changes, as all relevant data will be available on the screen and officers will be able to access information from anywhere within no time, Kadam said.

"The control room will have all records such as number of roads, bridges, fly-overs, slums, low-lying areas, high-rise buildings, status of traffic and hospitals," he said.

All 33 fire stations and six regional command centers will be linked through computer.

GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Global Information System) too will be installed in all fire engines so that tracking becomes easy.

The brigade has also decided to procure Integrated Control Command Vehicle (ICCV) to have total control in incident handling. It will offer facilities like outside broadcasting and screen for live coverage of disasters.

ICCV will also have facilities for urgent meetings.

With these changes, the fire brigade hopes to achieve world-class standards in fire fighting and disaster management in the coming years, Kadam said.

Tata Consultancy Services will computerise its system while ACE Televoice services is developing a special software, Kadam added.
